The Surf City Candy Story

Surf City Candy, Inc. first opened its door back in June of 2000. It was founded by the Vasilik Family, consisting of two brothers Rick and Ken and their mom Mille (known by many visiting families and local children as: “Grandma Candy”).

At a young age, Rick and Ken learned the value of a real family. The dedication required to work together toward success, and how to support one another through thick and thin. As these two brothers grew up in Southern California, they learned each others strengths and weakness. What they enjoyed as individuals, as well what they enjoyed together as a family. They continued to work together toward a common goal, each contributing their individual special skills and talents to accomplish a positive end result for their family.

Both worked many years in their perspective fields before giving any thought to working for themselves. Over time they visited and observed the presentation of various products, limited inventories and the basic operations of various businesses. Once it was determined that they wanted to have a candy store, they agreed that it had to be a “Family Style” candy store. And to succeed, they had to be better than the other guy. They observed various candy facilities all over Southern California.

The family’s dedication toward one another was applied to the candy business, it wasn’t very long before hurdles were overcome and accomplishments grew. A new building was found that would become the home for Surf City Candy. With the help of some long-time family friends, Ken designed a plan, Rick built displays, and Grandma Candy started wrapping candy like there was no tomorrow. She continues to inspire and gets things ready for every tomorrow. Though Grandma Candy is no longer at the store on a daily basis, the evidence of her contributions can be seen throughout the store each and every day. Some customers have become old friends and will often ask about Grandma Candy.

Surf City Candy has determined that what today’s candy lover wants is an attractive well stocked facility that has everything their sweet-tooth could possible crave, presented in a clean and attractive manner and a welcome feeling from the time they enter throughout the entire candy shopping experience. As a shopper, the first time you visit and every visit there after, you can expect to be greeted upon your entry to Surf City Candy. No one’s going to be hovering over you while you’re shopping, but rest assured that should you require any assistance someone is right there. Make your selection and before you leave you’re going to be hearing someone telling you to: “Have a Sweet Day!”
Ken says “We’ve seen babies grow into children, children into young ladies and gentlemen, and eventually adults with their own responsibilities”. “We’ve seen couples come together, and families formed, and we’ll continue to see families growing …because, this is a family place”.

One of the things that sets Surf City Candy apart from the other candy stores, is the fact that they present their products is a clean and attractive manner. While others may have everything in tubs and bins, Surf City Candy goes the extra step and wraps or packages their products. Yes it involves additional time and labor, but when you make the selection of your favorite treats, you can be sure that they’ll be as fresh as the day it was delivered. Shoppers often comment that they appreciate the extra work that Surf City Candy provides to preserve freshness and prevent other shoppers from handling the many selections.
